"

British Vane A-Class Championships (Day 1)

There was 17 boats that turned up for this prestigious regatta hosted by Fleetwood MY&PBC. The sailing conditions were difficult with waves creating a large chop at the clubhouse end of the lake and as well as the wind blowing from the west at 20mph, gusting 28mph at times, made these elegant large yachts power to windward with their skippers running frantically to keep up with them also down wind.

Inevitably the 17 boat fleet started to reduce as some boats were damaged during the racing. Repairs  continued throughout the day, but still these boats would perform to their best in such strong wind conditions.

David Bell sailing a John Simpson design yacht sailed admirably throughout the day to make an excellent start to his campaign. However, there is along way to go before crossing the finishing line on Friday afternoon. Locals Derek Preistley started very well and Graham Butler was also very fast today before sustaining damage. Graham has a lot of re-sails  and will make up ground on the top 3 if successful.

Day 2 Report

Today the wind continued to be from the west but had decreased in strength slightly to approximately 15 mph, gusting to 20 mph at times. The competitors were split into 2 fleets and will race each other for the next couple of days. During the mornings racing Chris Harris proved to be the most productive taking most of the points available. During the afternoons session B-Fleets competitors took to the water, David Bell the regatta’s early leader continued to sail with confidence and has now opened up a 17 point lead at the top. Graham Butler who was damaged yesterday managed to win some of his re-sails and has climbed to second place overall. With only 6 points separating third place and the middle of the fleet, there is still a lot to play for."
